Why Can’t People in Compton See ‘Straight Outta Compton?’

straight-outta-compton movie*Yes, it’s a bit of a trick question, but read on for the not too surprising answer.

With the success “Straight Outta Compton” is having at the box office ($60.2 million opening), would it be too much of a stretch to actually see the current number one film in the land in the city it takes it’s name from?

Apparently so, according to CBS Los Angeles, which noted that there are no movie theaters in Compton. USC sociology professor Manuel Pastor referenced the city’s economic status as the reason why moviegoers in Compton aren’t able to view the film … in Compton.

“It’s a low income area, it’s been heavily dis-invested in,” Pastor told CBS Los Angeles. “When you live in a community that doesn’t have that kind of retail, it’s a sign that the community is devalued and people within the community feel devalued.”

The sad circumstance comes as Compton City Manager Johnny Ford confirmed that negotiations are being made to bring an entertainment complex to the California city. Among the things that will be included with the proposed complex will be a 16-screen cinema as well as 30 percent of retail space.

As things get underway for new retailers to come to Compton, Dr. Dre is doing his part for the city’ with using the money made from his latest album, “Compton,: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre” to build a new arts and entertainment center for kids in Compton.
