*British actor David Oyelowo will voice secret agent 007 in the new James Bond audio book of the latest Bond novel by Anthony Horowitz.
As the New York Times reports, “Trigger Mortis: A James Bond Novel,” is a sequel, of sorts, to 1959’s “Goldfinger.”
Horowitz was commissioned by Ian Fleming’s estate to write a book “that could have come from Ian’s own typewriter.”
Oyelowo revealed that he “was asked specifically by the Fleming estate” to voice the character, which he said “is really special.”
“I am officially the only person on planet Earth who can legitimately say, “I am the new James Bond,” Oyelow said. “Even saying that name is the cinematic equivalent of doing the ‘to be or not to be’ speech.”
Oyelowo described his Bond as “a man who is very self-assured.”
“What an honour to have an actor as talented as David to read my take on Bond,” Horowitz said. “He has a brilliant voice and talent for bringing out the nuances of dialogue and characters.”
Horowitz said that he tried to write “the most authentic James Bond novel anyone could have written,” while also admitting that “trying to capture Fleming’s style was not easy.”
While Daniel Craig is currently committed to making at least one more film after this year’s “Spectre,” rumors are gaining momentum as to who will takeover the role, with Tom Hardy a favorite to carry on the franchise. Progressives have made it known from the rooftops to social media that they would like to see Idris Elba play the role, however, earlier this year, Idris said he’s no longer interested.
“Honestly, it’s a rumor that’s really starting to eat itself,” Elba told the audience at London’s British Film Institute. “If there was ever any chance of me getting Bond, it’s gone.”
New Bond author Horowitz would agree with Elba’s comment. He recently said that Idris is “too street” to play 007.
“For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a colour issue,” he said. “I think he is probably a bit too ‘street’ for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah.”
Elba took to Instagram to respond to the “too street” comment. Alongside a screen shot of the Daily Mail article reporting Horowitz’ comments, Elba wrote: “Always keep smiling!! It takes no energy and never hurts! Learned that from the Street!!” He added the hashtag “#septemberstilllovesyou” to his message.
“Trigger Mortis” is currently available in audiobook, hardback and ebook editions.
