Emmy Producer: This Year’s Diversity ‘Will Make The Show More Interesting’

2015 Emmy Nominees
2015 Emmy Nominees: Taraji P. Henson, Viola Davis, Queen Latifah, Regina King, Mo’Nique, Angela Bassett, Niecy Nash, Uzo Aduba, Don Cheadle, David Oyelowo, Anthony Anderson and Andre Braugher

*Viola Davis and Keegan-Michael Key were among the final batch of Emmy presenters announced Friday ahead of the 67th annual ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 20.

She’ll hit the stage armed with her lead actress in a drama nomination for ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder,” and Key with his lead actor in a comedy nod for Comedy Central’s “Key & Peele.”

The newcomers join “Empire” duo Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard, “Black-ish” duo Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, LL Cool J and Kerry Washington among previously announced presenters, while Henson and Anderson are also vying for lead actor awards.

Regina King (ABC’s “American Crime”), Angela Bassett (“American Horror Story: Freak Show”) and Mo’Nique (“Bessie”) will face off against each other in the supporting actress in a limited series or movie category.

Meanwhile, Queen Latifah (HBO’s “Bessie”), Don Cheadle (Showtime’s “House of Cards”), Niecy Nash (“Getting On”), Uzo Aduba (“Orange is the New Black”) Andre Braugher (Fox’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) and David Oyelowo (HBO’s “Nightingale”) are also competing for hardware, making this one of the most diverse years in Emmy history.

Executive producer Don Mischer hopes it will translate to special moments at the podium, and ultimately, a more exciting telecast.

“We hope that we will have unexpected winners, which will make the show more interesting. And I think we have a better chance of that this year, because I think that the diversity and inclusiveness of this year’s nominees are greater than I’ve ever known before,” he told TCA critics in August.

The Lead Actress in a Drama category might be the most anticipated race of the night, with both Davis and Henson competing against perennial winner Claire Danes of “Homeland” and longtime critical favorite Tatiana Maslany of BBC America’s “Orphan Black.”

If Davis pulls out a win, she can probably point to one scene above all others that stuck in the minds of Emmy voters. Below, the actress looks back on the moment she approached producers with the idea of her character, Annalise Keating, removing her wig.

The 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on Sept. 20 with host Andy Samberg.
