*They’re only nine years apart, but Lorraine Toussaint, at 55, has been cast as the mother of Morris Chestnut’s title character in Fox’s new series “Rosewood.”

Toussaint will play Donna Rosewood, whose son, Dr. Beaumont Rosewood, Jr., is a private pathologist assisting the Miami police department. Their real life age difference will be kept out of the script, but Toussaint offered a perfectly good explanation for it, should writers feel the need to include it in the show: “It’s just going to be black don’t crack.”

“My mother, when she died, did not have a wrinkle. And all joking aside, in the black community, sometimes it’s very difficult to tell who is who and what’s what, because we age well,” Toussaint told journalists last month at the Television Critics Association press tour.

Below, she explains why executive producer Todd Harthan brought her onto the series, despite the age thing:

“Rosewood” premieres Sept. 23 on Fox.
