Michael Sam Says Coming Out Ruined His NFL Goals, Hangs with ‘Empire’ Cast

Michael Sam

*In an interview with radio personality Dan Patrick, Michael Sam confessed that he’d be in the NFL if he hadn’t come out as gay, and many would agree with his statement. He also explained that he wishes he had not been drafted by the St. Louis Rams.

“It was really hard for me. I actually wish I went undrafted, because I could choose a team who needed some really good pass rushers and was weak on the depth chart,” Sam said.

Following a disappointing year of being dropped from two NFL teams and walking away from the Montreal Alouettes, Michael recently announced that he plans to make an NFL comeback next year, Rolling Out reports. He also told Patrick that he believes he would be in the NFL now had he not come out of the closet as gay.

Sam explained that he originally planned to come out after he made an NFL roster, but feared someone would out him before his time, and now he feels like a victim of the NFL’s homophobia.

“I’m not going to say … but it probably would have been better for me if I didn’t come out, I would be on a roster,” Sam said. “But, as I said, I have no regrets whatsoever.”

Being an out of work athlete has its perks, as Sam proved when he hung out with the cast of the hit FOX drama “Empire,” including Terrance Howard and Jussie Smollett.

Season 2 of “Empire” returned last Wednesday to a series high, between live and delayed views, the premiere episode had over 22 million viewers tuning in to the Lyons.
