*This week’s episode of “Black-ish” titled “Rock, Paper, Scissors, Gun,” finds the Johnson family tackling the great gun debate after Dre hears about multiple break-ins in the neighborhood. Tempted to buy a gun to protect his family, Dre meets resistance from Bow who is not comfortable with the idea. Meanwhile, Junior busies himself protecting the family from the real threat, cyber terrorism, and Zoey has Pops teach her the art of Karate to defend herself.
Created by Kenya Barris, the second season of “Black-ish” premiered strong on ABC September 23 with an arresting episode about “The Word,” and once again, Barris has crafted an episode that resonates with the human condition and will leave you pondering over the many different ways to protect your family, but what’s the “best” way?
The episode was quite personal for this reviewer, triggering memories of a violent encounter where the only available weapon to use as defense was a high heel…. hey, it worked!
The Johnson household becomes divided on the gun issue until faced with making a life-saving decision that, in the end, will leave you wondering who exactly is winning the debate on the complex topic of gun control in the U.S., and which side on you on?
The episode continues to boast the craftsmanship of writers who develop carefully composed dialogue that evokes from series’ stars, the type of emotion and perfect comedic timing that contribute to creating a realistic, thought-provoking and entertaining story. Once again, “Black-ish” delivers a message without being judgmental or too preachy.
Regarding the subjects selected for Season 2, Anthony Anderson explains, “We pride ourselves on dealing with divisive topics within not only our own community, but the community at large, to create a conversation so two people can come to the table with opposing views and hopefully leave the table having a better understanding of what that other person had to say,” says Anderson. “We deal with it in a comedic and entertaining way. That’s what we’re going to do all season long.”
“Black-ish” airs Wednesdays at 9:30/8:30c on ABC.
