*After making history Sunday night on the Emmy stage, Viola Davis took her Outstanding Actress in a Lead Drama statue to the press room to discuss what had just happened, and how long it had taken her to reach that precious moment.

“You guys have to realize, I’ve been in this business 35 years and 27 years professionally,” she told the gathered journalists. “I’m the journeyman actor that you saw in one scene here, two scenes there. I’ve been eeking out a living doing theater, Broadway, off-Broadway, film, supporting roles. So I’m just excited to be part of the conversation. I’ve seen the unemployment line a lot.”

Below, the star of ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder” was asked to comment on the recent Matt Damon racial controversy from HBO’s “Project Greenlight,” a reality series that follows a first-time filmmaker in the process of making his or her first feature. In the season premiere, Damon tried to convince African American producer Effie Brown (“Dear White People”) that her concerns with diversity should not lie within the casting of the filmmaker for the series, but should focus on the film’s cast of actors and actresses.

“When we’re talking about diversity, you do it in the casting of the film, not the casting of the show,” Damon told Brown. Social media got wind of the exchange and blasted Damon for having the audacity to tell a black producer when and where diversity should be considered.

Asked at the Emmys to comment on Damon’s quote, Davis said she had not seen the show, and was not aware of the quote’s context – but she gave this answer:

“How to Get Away With Murder” Season 2 premieres Thursday, Sept. 24, at 10 p.m. on ABC.
