Viola Davis Makes Emmy/TV History

viola davis (with 2015 emmy)

*Sunday night history was made at the Emmy Awards.

Viola Davis – who beat out Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”) – became the first African-American to win an Emmy for Outstanding lead actress in a drama.

Davis won for her role as Annalise Keating a law professor in the Shonda Rhimes created series “How To Get Away With Murder” for ABC .

“The only thing that separates women of color from anyone is opportunity,” said an emotional Davis as she thanked Rhimes, Halle Berry and Henson, among others.

All in all, Sunday night African American actresses didn’t do too bad. Nope, not too bad at all. We also saw wins for Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is The New Black”) in the Supporting Actress Drama category and Regina King (“American Crime”) as Supporting Actress In A Limited Series or Movie.

In fact, the wins are being characterized as a record for diversity in the top categories.
