*Anthony Mackie may put in work saving the world as The Falcon in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, but the actor had to save himself from the onslaught of criticism laid on him after endorsing Donald Trump for president.
“If you look at Trump, he’s an easy sell, because you can sell him as the guy who worked his way up from nothing,” Mackie told BET during a interview it posted on Monday (Oct. 19).
“If you’re the pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps candidate, people would identify with that.”
When asked if his remark sets up an endorsement of Trump , Mackie stated, “I’m on the bandwagon. I’m drinking the Kool-Aid.”
Mackie’s comments not only caught the attention of Gawker, Vulture and USA Today, but also triggered a slew of comments on social media. The entertainer ended up becoming the number one trending topic on Twitter, while catching the funny and relentless wrath of Black Twitter.
Soon after, Mackie went into damage control mode, with the following tweet about the controversy:
Sorry Donald, that wasn’t an endorsement. Just a bad attempt at a joke, I guess?
