*Can you handle an “Empire” spin-off?

FOX and series co-creator Lee Daniels believe you’re about that life, so they are not ruling out the idea of moving forward with a spin-off of the breakout hit drama series, as long as the characters have a compelling story that lures the audience, Vibe reports.

Last month, Daniels told reporters that a spin-off of his show would happen “without question,” even suggesting the possibility of a Cookie Lyon prequel. Now, Fox TV Group co-chief Dana Walden tells Vulture that discussions have begun about how to make an extension happen, explaining that the foundation for the new show will be laid early next year via a characters or via one or more episodes of “Empire.”

“If there’s a character … that feels original enough, has enough momentum and enough of a storytelling engine, we will definitely look to spin Empire off for next season,” she said. Said character, Walden added, “would, in all likelihood, appear in the second half of this season.”

Don’t go getting your hopes high for the spin-off just yet, as Waldon emphasized that she and the FOX executives won’t rush the creative team or force them to churn out contrived story arcs.

“We just want to make sure the right idea presents itself to the creators, and that it’s not something that feels forced or fabricated,” noted Waldon. “And we’re not going to rush anything. We want the writers to stay focused on making a great season of Empire this year.”

Daniels is also working on another music-centered show for the network titled “Star,” which will chronicle the rise of a young girl group from Atlanta. Written by Tom Donaghy. Walden says a draft of the pilot script has been turned in and her team “are really excited about it.”

“Empire” airs Wednesdays on FOX.
