*In Los Angeles, the Inner City Cultural Center Alumni (ICCC) is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of its founding. The celebration entitled “OUT OF THE ASHES: FROM MULTI- CULTURALISM TO DIVERSITY – 1965-2015,” is to honor the history and legacy of The Late C. Bernard (Jack) Jackson, Founder of ICCC.
The celebration will be held November 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center, located at 4716 West Washington Blvd., Los Angeles 90016 and November 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Kaos Network 4343 Leimert Blvd., Los Angeles 9008C.
- Bernard Jackson, an award winning playwright, musician, composer, lyricist, and linguist, was the founder of the nation’s first minority owned and operated multi-cultural performing and visual arts institution in the country, providing minorities access to training and skills in the stage, film, and television industries. His philosophy of color-blind and non-traditional casting, was the forerunner to all discussions of diversity in today’s entertainment marketplace. The event includes a reunion of Illustrious Alumni of the Inner City Cultural Center, Free Industry panels featuring a presentation by Dr. Darnell Hunt, author of the controversial 2015 Hollywood Diversity Report, and the presentation of The Prestigious Elaine Gayle Kashiki Award will be presented to Academy Award winning actor, the late Gregory Peck who was instrumental in securing funding that established ICCC, to be accepted by Cecilia Peck on behalf of her father.
Entertainment that evening will include ICCC alumni, Malcolm Jamal Warner, presenting selections from his new CD release ‘Selfless’, among others.
ICCC was home to such luminaries as Mako (Oscar Nominee for “Sand Pebbles” and East West Players, founder), George Takei (“Star Trek”), Luis Valdez, (“Zoot Suit,” El Teatro Campesino), Arthur Mitchell (Dance Theatre of Harlem), Alvin Ailey (Alvin Ailey Dance Company), Beah Richards (Oscar Nominee, “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner”), Paul Winfield (Oscar Nominee, “Sounder”), Denzel Washington (Oscar Award winner), Carmen Zapata (Bilingual Foundations for the Arts, founder) Marla Gibbs (The Jefferson’s), Adolph Caesar (Oscar Nominee “A Soldier’s Story”), Louis Gossett, Jr. (Oscar Award Winner), Nobu McCarthy, Chinese Classical Ballet Company, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Donald McKayle, Soon Tek Oh, and many others. https://youtu.be/81jdOmIAyx4
