*Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Janelle Monáe has signed on to co-star alongside Naomie Harris in the coming-of-age drama “Moonlight” directed by Barry Jenkins. The role will be the Mother Android’s introduction to the big screen.
Produced by A24, Adele Romanski and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment company, the film follows the story of Chiron, a young man navigating through the “War on Drugs” era in Miami. The film is an adaptation of the play “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue.”
Variety reports that Andre Holland and Mahershala Ali also star in the film that is “structured in three different time periods as Chiron battles a deteriorating home life and deals with his dawning sexuality.”
The crew began filming this month, no release date has been announced yet.
Harris will next be seen in “Spectre.” Holland stars in “The Knick,” and you can catch Ali in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.”
Meanwhile, Los Angeles Clipper Blake Griffin appears in a new spot for Kia titled “Next Level,” and as Ad Week notes, the ad is timed to the opening of the NBA season this week. It is also the first of four spots that will highlight the next-level performance of the 2016 Kia Optima.
“Blake Griffin is a powerful force both on and off the court, and as a brand ambassador, he has helped raise Kia’s profile during our rapid transformation over the last few years,” said Tim Chaney, vice president of marketing communications, KMA. “Our partnership with Blake has played a significant role in Kia becoming the most recognized automotive brand among basketball fans across the country, and in this new campaign he’s back and better than ever with his distinctive deadpan humor.”
