*In an interview with the New York Times magazine for its Culture issue, Nicki Minaj broke down the ill feelings behind her “What’s good?” response to Miley Cyrus at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, saying Miley has “some big balls” to challenge her on issues of race.
A quick refresher course on their beef: Nicki called out the VMAs host on stage in response to Miley’s criticism of her in a New York Times article. In the piece, Miley said Nicki was misguided for getting into a Twitter beef with Taylor Swift over the Video of the Year category — and for getting upset that black artists don’t get enough credit.
“The fact that you feel upset about me speaking on something that affects black women makes me feel like you have some big balls,” Minaj, 32, told NYT mag of Cyrus. “You’re in videos with black men, and you’re bringing out black women on your stages, but you don’t want to know how black women feel about something that’s so important?”
She continued: “Come on, you can’t want the good without the bad. If you want to enjoy our culture and our lifestyle, bond with us, dance with us, have fun with us, twerk with us, rap with us, then you should also want to know what affects us, what is bothering us, what we feel is unfair to us. You shouldn’t not want to know that.”
