Sarkisian Firing Means USC Has to Struggle to Keep Top Recruits

Steve-Sarkisian*Monday’s sacking of USC head football coach Steve Sarkisian is making it hard for the school’s football program to maintain its grip on its top recruits.

According to TMZ Sports, it’s getting crucial for USC as several members of the program are seriously reaching out to the recruits such as Josh Imatorbhebhe, “a 4-star WR who is considered to be one of the best high school players in the country, to convince him to stay with the team.

Chatting with the site, Imatorbhebhe’s mother Zizi revealed that USC’s coaching staff reached out to Josh on Sunday and Monday to keep him updated about the Sarkisian situation as well as express how the school still desperately wants him on the team in the fall.

Despite the interest, Zizi mentioned that her family is holding out on a final decision until they see how things turn out.

“It’s a challenging time, obviously, but we’re waiting it out at this point. But [Josh] is going to have to keep his options open,” she said before adding that, “[Josh] has been in contact with the other recruits, and they’re going to reconsider also.”

The football program’s efforts to keep its recruits is the latest development to occur since USC terminated Sarkisian’s contract after putting him on an indefinite leave of absence Sunday. The  coach has been in the news lately for his reported issues with alcohol. Prior to being placed on indefinite leave, Sarkisian was said to be “not healthy” when he was at the USC practice facility on Sunday.

Overall, the drama with Sarkisian has proven to be a public relations nightmare for USC. In addition to Imatorbhebhe, the school is trying to keep Cary Angeline, a 4-star tight end who’s been getting offers from various schools including Florida State, Alabama and Auburn.

TMZ notes that Angeline’s father stated that his son received assurance of USC moving forward and “looking to win out this season” via separate phone calls from the school’s interim coach Clay Helton and the tight end coach.

As for where Angeline stands, things look to be up in the air.

“USC is an awesome school with a great tradition, but we have to keep an eye on things,” Angeline’s father said.
