*The suspect who authorities say opened fire at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College on Thursday is dead, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin told reporters.
The unnamed shooter was a 20-year-old male, according to Oregon Gov. Kate Brown. Investigators are examining social media postings they believe were made by the suspect in which he stated his intentions, a source told MSNBC.
“We arrived to find multiple patients in multiple classrooms. Law enforcement was on scene and had the shooter neutralized,” Douglas County Fire Marshal Ray Shoufler told CNN.
He said that two patients died while being transported to a hospital.
Mercy Medical Center posted on Twitter that it had received nine patients, with three more on the way. Three victims with – 18 to 34 gunshot wounds among them, collectively – arrived at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield, about 70 miles north of the shooting scene, reports MSNBC.
The shooting appears to have started in Snyder Hall before the gunman moved to the Science Building, a source told CNN. Those killed and wounded were found in at least two classrooms.
President Obama has been briefed on the shooting and is scheduled to deliver a statement at 6:20 EST.
Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder sounded off about the incident on Twitter:
Now Oregon. We weep again as a nation. Is the answer to our gun violence epidemic to do nothing? Again? Come on America! We solve problems
— Eric Holder (@EricHolder) October 1, 2015
Enough! Now Oregon. What reason now to oppose safety measures? Other nations have not had these mass shootings after implementing reforms
— Eric Holder (@EricHolder) October 1, 2015
Gun safety measures will not – by themselves – stop violence. But as part of a comprehensive effort this great Nation can be made more safe
