*Marlene Pinnock, the woman who was punched repeatedly last year by a California Highway Patrol officer on the 10 Freeway, was arrested again on the same freeway the previous incident occurred.
Speaking with The Los Angeles Times, CHP officials said the arrest took place Tuesday (Oct. 6) as Pinnock was taken in for a mental health evaluation after she ventured into traffic. Sgt. Joe Nunez revealed more about the incident, saying two officers took Pinnock into custody about 2:25 a.m. after they found her wandering on the right shoulder of the eastbound 10 Freeway near La Brea Avenue.
Pinnock’s longtime struggle with mental illness was noted by the Times, which obtained an incident report of what happened. According to the report, Pinnock “pulled away and ran into traffic lanes” when the CHP officers tried to detain her.
As it turned out, the officers ended up removing Pinnock from the freeway as they took her in under the 5150 welfare and institutions code. The code allows for a person to be detained for mental health evaluation.
“After further evaluation, Ms. Pinnock” was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center for “mental health evaluation and treatment,” Nunez said.
Pinnock’s arrest comes more than a year after video surfaced of CHP officer Daniel Andrew punching Pinnock at least nine times as she was pinned to the ground on July 1, 2014. The clip, which was shot by shot by a passing motorist, instantly triggered a reaction after it was posted online.
An investigation of the incident followed that resulted in the case going to court. Pinnock ultimately received a $1.5-million settlement from the case. As part of the settlement, Andrew agreed to resign his position as a CHP officer, the Times reports while noting that money from the settlement was allotted to a special needs trust for Pinnock.
The publication goes on to mention that the Los Angeles district attorney’s office is still deciding whether to charge Andrew in the controversial incident.
Although the CHP initially said Andrew was trying to keep Pinnock from walking into traffic, it went on to state that she ignored his commands and became “physically combative.”
Pinnock countered the claims, saying she did nothing to provoke Andrew. According to her, she was walking to a place to sleep when Andrew came up behind her and threw her on the ground.
