*Los Angeles – Did you know that 46 million Americans have a meal gap, which means they can’t afford to pay for three meals a day? Eight million of those hungry Americans are baby boomers – age range from 50 to 64.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop there. A 2014 Feeding America survey reported that about 25% of military households require food assistance and 15 million are children.
Philanthropist and Entrepreneur Cheyenne Martin, a resident of the San Fernando Valley, recognizes that it takes a “village” to help address the food-strapped families in Los Angeles County.
Known for her generous ways, Martin formed a 501(c) 3 nonprofit, The Cheyenne Martin Foundation (CMF) as a “call to action” and to create an easy way for her friends in the entertainment industry to donate their time and/or resources needed year round by families from all walks of life.
“My mantra is based on Poet Marianne Moore’s quote ‘The heart that gives, gathers,” said Martin.
CMF main reason for existence is to stand in the gap for those in need.” The event was 95% funded by Martin. “My goal is to increase the donations and the number of families we can feed every year,” she said.
On November 19, 2015, CMF launched the 1st Annual Cheyenne Martin Foundation “Help Feed a Family” weekend by providing more than 75 turkeys, hams, sweet potato and apple pies to 75 L.A. area families.
Martin’s vision came to fruition by the memory of the late Marqese Tann aka Wolf Da Boss and his mother Sharrone Tann, along with some of her long-time friends to distribute food, including military veteran and entrepreneur Chasity Clark.
“I come from a large Southern family and we believed in sharing our food with anyone less fortunate in our neighborhood,” said Clark who donated 52 pies for the CMF event.
CMF’s Season of Giving Weekend – Nov. 19 through Nov. 21 – serviced families identified by the following nonprofits in the Greater Los Angeles area:
- Jenesse Center, Inc. is the oldest domestic violence intervention program in L.A.
- Downtown Women’s Center is the only organization in L.A. dedicated to women on Skid Row.
- Thomas Bradley Family Source Center provides L.A. residents with free and low-cost services.
