*Ryan Coogler’s only window to meet with Sylvester Stallone regarding his pitch for “Creed” was right when he was about to shoot his first feature, “Fruitvale Station.”

The timing couldn’t have been worse for the Oakland native, but he had been trying to convince the creator of “Rocky” for over a year to consider his idea for a spinoff involving Apollo Creed’s son.

“We were due to start filming ‘Fruitvale’ the next week, and I was losing my mind in prep, completely overwhelmed,” Coogler said at a recent press conference for “Creed.” “I was looking at the whole schedule and we had to shoot the whole movie in 20 days. And I get a call from [my agent] Adam Venit.”

Venit told him to get on a plane to Los Angeles because Sly will have an hour in his schedule the next day.

“I had to lie to most of my crew, told them I had a situation I had to go down to,” Coogler said.

Actually, he did have a situation in Los Angeles other than the Stallone meeting that required his immediate attention.

He explains below:

“Creed” arrives in theaters on Nov. 25.
