Ebony Celebrates Black Power with Williams, Belafonte and Zendaya

Zendaya, Jesse Williams, Harry Belanfonte *Jesse Williams, Harry Belafonte and Zendaya are among the top 100 “blacks” featured in EBONY magazine’s Black Power issue. The publication is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a December/January issue that urges readers to “Stand For Something.”

As The YBF notes, the issue pays homage to the outstanding achievements of African-American influencers in entertainment, politics and sports, including NBA player and literacy advocate Russell Westbrook, the cast of “Empire” and “Power,” Janelle Monae, Prince,  Regina King, Viola Davis, Jada Pinkett Smith, hair-care entrepreneur Miko Branch, Rev. Traci Blackmon and many more

Jesse and Zendaya discuss the new civil rights movement in the magazine, with Zendaya saying: “I grew up in Oakland. My Aunties were Panthers. I’ve got the spirit.”

“It is truly an honor to celebrate the tremendous talents and accomplishments of the honorees on this year’s Power 100 list,” says EBONY’s editor-in-chief Kierna Mayo. “From the #BlackLivesMatter movement to technology, disruptors to the boardrooms of Fortune 500 companies, all of the selected individuals have made an undeniable impact. They represent outstanding examples of greatness, and provide hope and inspiration for the next generation.”

Interesting to note that power couple Jay Z and Beyonce did not make the list. Belafonte has been quite critical of the couple in the past, chastising them and other black celebrities for turning “their back on social responsibility.”

He’s also criticized President Barack Obama in the past as too, most recently he ridiculed Obama’s campaign slogan “Yes We Can.”

“The political cleverness, if you want to call it that, (is) the sentence was never finished,” Belafonte said. “Yes we can what?”

EBONY will honor its Power 100 during the 70th Anniversary Gala on Wednesday, December 2nd at The Beverly Hilton in L.A. The celebration will feature a ’70s inspired theme and it will be hosted by Arsenio Hall.
