Google’s Veterans Day Doodle Slammed for Not Being White Enough

*A white man is smiling and waving in Google’s Veterans Day doodle, but some people have expressed outrage that he is the lone white person in the drawing.

The Doodle features a row of smiling veterans representing various branches of the U.S. armed forces. All except one are people of color.

The lack of whiteness was offensive to some, as evidence by the below tweets:

Let’s stop right here. Mic.com offered the following in response to the above tweet stating “85% of vets are white males.”

The truth about American veterans: The Google Doodle represents a diversifying veteran class. Yes, our armed forces’ veterans and active duty members are predominantly white — but that’s changing.

According to a 2013 study by the National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics, white veterans comprise 66.3% of the total veteran population since 9/11 — compared to 90.9% around World War II and 82.9% around the Vietnam War.

According to a study on Va.gov, minority veterans in 2013 comprised roughly 21% of the country’s total veteran population. That same year, 30.7% of active duty service members identified as nonwhite, according to one demographics report.
