The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Jason Van Dyke, the officer who fatally shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, has been released on $1.5 million bond.

A spokesperson for the Cook County sheriff’s department said that Van Dyke posted 10 percent of the bail set by the judge and was released. He had been in jail since Tuesday after prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder for shooting McDonald 16 times on Oct. 20. 2014.

The high profile case has caused the spotlight of criticism to be shined on Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and Mayor Rahm Emmanuel. Some are calling for Alvarez to resign, while others are beyond upset with Emmanuel for waiting 13 months to file charges against Van Dyke.

The situation has been tense in Chicago since footage of the volatile dash cam video showing the teen’s final moments alive was released Tuesday evening. Since then, activists and youth advocates have taken to the streets in protest demanding an end to injustice, the killings of Black lives at the hands of police and each other and a call for equality.
