‘Compton’, ‘Beasts’, Latifah, Aduba Among SAG Award Nominees

*The main cast of “Straight Outta Compton” was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award this morning, adding to a 2016 award season collection that already includes nods from the People’s Choice Awards, the Satellite Awards, five from the NAACP Image Awards and three wins from the African American Film Awards, including Best Picture.

Nominations for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced Wednesday morning. The cast of NWA’s biopic will compete against the casts of “Trumbo,” “Beasts of No Nation,” “The Big Short” and “Spotlight” for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, which is the SAG equivalent of the top picture of the year.

Last night, it was named Best Picture, Best Ensemble, and Best Actor (Jason Mitchell) by the African-American Film Critics Association.

Also nominated for SAG Awards are Comedy Central’s “Key & Peele,” the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black” and its co-star Uzo Aduba.

Emmy winner Viola Davis earned “How to Get Away With Murder’s” lone SAG nomination, best actress in a drama. She’ll compete against “Homeland’s” Claire Danes, “The Good Wife’s” Julianna Margulies, “Downton Abbey’s” Maggie Smith and “House of Cards’” Robin Wright.

Acting nominations also went to Queen Latifah for HBO’s “Bessie” and Idris Elba for both “Beasts of No Nation” (Netflix) and “Luther” (BBC America).

The awards will be held at the Shrine Auditorium on Jan. 30 following voting by the 165,000 members of SAG-AFTRA. The telecast will air live on TNT and TBS.
