*Efforts requiring Bill Cosby’s wife Camille to give a sworn deposition in a defamation lawsuit against the comedian are in dispute.

The Associated Press reports that Joseph Cammarata, a lawyer for the seven women behind the suit, subpoenaed Camille to be deposed on Jan. 6 at a hotel in Springfield, Massachusetts.

In their motion, which was filed Friday (Dec. 18), Cosby’s lawyers, say that Camille has no firsthand, non-repetitive knowledge of issues in the lawsuit. The women accuse Bill Cosby of sexually assaulting them and claim the TV icon allowed his representatives to paint them as liars after they went public with their allegations.

The seven women are among a group of approximately 50 women who have generated headlines after coming forward over the last year with allegations of Cosby sexually assaulting or having unwanted sexual contact with them decades ago, the AP notes.

Cosby’s lawyers countered Cammarata’s subpoena, arguing that Camille Cosby has no firsthand, non-repetitive knowledge of issues in the lawsuit. In addition, they stated that any confidential communications between Cosby and his wife are protected by the Massachusetts spousal disqualification rule.

For Cammarata, the issue lies with him being able to question Camille Cosby in light of her being her husband’s business manager.

“I think she has information that’s relevant to the litigation in this matter,” Cammarata told the AP Friday.

Nevertheless, Cosby’s lawyers expressed that Camille Cosby does not have any information about the accuracy of the women’s allegations. The go on to allege that the attempt to subject Camille to a deposition is “nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to pressure defendant in the face of subjecting his wife to the shame and embarrassment of responding to questions about his alleged infidelities and sexual misconduct.”

The Cosby lawyer’s efforts to get a deposition from Camille Cosby is the latest development to occur since Bill Cosby filed a countersuit against the women last week, accusing them of making false allegations of sexual misconduct for financial gain.

According to the 78-year-old funnyman, the women have “engaged in a campaign to assassinate” his reputation and character.
