Inspiration for ‘The Wire’ Dies; Is 50 Cent’s Cat Drinking Vodka in Instagram Video?

melvin williams*The man who inspired the classic HBO series “The Wire” has died.

TMZ reports that Melvin Williams died Thursday in Maryland. He was 73.

During his life, Williams was known as a powerful drug dealer in Baltimore in the ‘70s and ‘80s who spent several years behind bars for trafficking. In 1987, David Simon profiled Williams for a story that ran in the Baltimore Sun. After his interview with Williams, Simon when on to create “The Wire.”

Williams ended up with a small role on the show as Deacon and is believed to have been the inspiration behind Avon Barksdale, the character played by Wood Harris.

50-cent In other news, 50 Cent is catching heat over an Instagram video he posted that seems to feature his cat drinking Effen vodka from a martini glass. The rapper has served as a spokesman for the brand since late 2014.

Despite 50 Cent inserting a caption with the video claiming the cat is drinking water, not vodka, folks were not sold as they voiced their outrage of the clip.
