Oprah Opens Up About the Son She Lost and Reveals His Name

Oprah-Winfrey*Oprah Winfrey has more than her share of success, but that good fortune did not come without more than enough tribulation along the way.

Among those trials was the loss of her son when she was 14 after becoming pregnant from years of sexual abuse by various family members. A few weeks after giving birth prematurely, the child died. At the time, Winfrey decided against naming her son when he was born.

Despite Winfrey keeping quiet, news of the child’s death was made public in 1990 by a relative who sold the story to the National Enquirer.

After initially being crushed about what happened going public, Winfrey bounced back with speaking openly about her situation. Years after sharing her pain, the 61-year-old former daytime talk show queen has come forward again to speak on her son.

During an interview in Australia while sharing her “life lessons,” Winfrey revealed why she hid her pregnancy for so long, saying that she felt a great deal of “pain and shame” at the time. Nowadays, Winfrey is more than willing to speak on her son as she opened up to reveal the name she recently gave him for the first time, news.au.com reports.

“I did an interview with a reporter before I came to Australia and she said you should name the baby son who died,” Winfrey said. “So I have named him, I had a little boy named Canaan.”

Although she didn’t disclose the exact spelling of the name, Winfrey did detail why she choose Canaan as the best name for late son.

“I named him Canaan because Canaan means new land, new life,” she said.

Canaan is a name that holds importance in the Bible as it served as the location God placed the Israelites in to start a new life after bringing them out of slavery in Egypt.
