Oshea Jackson Jr. is Not Dying, Remains Oscar Hopeful

Oshea Jackson Jr*The Internet decided that Ice Cube’s son, “Straight Outta Compton’s” Oshea Jackson Jr., was dead – and that rumor spread faster than water down the drain, birthing the #WeAreHereForYouShea hashtag.

No one is quite sure why the rumor started but when Oshea caught wind of his death hoax, he responded as you would expect.

“Whaaat the f*ck is this,” Jackson wrote on Instagram on Monday night. “Am I dying? Oh sh*t I better call me make sure I’m okay.”

He added, “Now that you mention it I haven’t heard from me all day. Pray for us. seriously. I’m not going through a rough time lol. Everybody got bad days y’all don’t make it a thing. I love you tho.”

Oshea and his “Straight Outta Compton” co-stars racked up several nominations for NAACP Image Awards in the category for Motion Picture, and nabbed a SAG nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. They also won the Big Breakout Cast honor during VH1 Big in 2015, which recognized the biggest entertainers and pop-culture moments of 2015.

“We are part of a movie that has the potential to be nominated for an Academy Award,” Jackson Jr. told Entertainment Weekly. “The most beautiful part about that, to me at least, is that if we’re nominated for an Academy Award, we didn’t have to have shackles on our feet. I didn’t have to get beat up a 1,000 times throughout the movie. Those films are great. Those films are powerful. Those films need to be seen, but they’re not the only ones that need recognition.”

The F. Gary Gray directed biopic arrives on DVD January 19, and Jackson Jr. hopes he’s allowed more opportunities to capitalize off/and continue to raise awareness about the black struggle and triumphs.

“Our trials and our times of pain get the most recognition, but Straight Outta Compton speaks to triumph. When it’s doubtful, when nobody is on your side, when your back is against the wall, you triumph and make it through. Showing growth through movies promotes growth. I want more movies like Straight Outta Compton. Showing our stories of triumph, we’ll make it through and we’ll get to something better,” he said.
