*A top Chicago police official is finding himself in more hot water, according to prosecutors who reveal that there were dozens of citizen complaints against him on file.
The revelation came Tuesday (Dec. 8) during the start of the trial of Glenn Evans. The police commander— who allegedly shoved his gun down the throat of Rickey Williams, a suspect, in 2013 — is charged with aggravated battery and official misconduct.
Prior to being on trial for the alleged incident, Evans was praised for working in some of Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods. Opening arguments from prosecutors painted Evans as someone who hid behind his badge as he threatened to kill Williams.
The Chicago Tribune noted that the complaints were logged between 2006 and 2014. Despite 36 grievances being filed by citizens, Evans rose in rank as he was promoted from sergeant to lieutenant to commander. As a result, Evans became the officer whom citizens most complained about for someone of his rank.
Although he was never disciplined for any of the allegations, Evans was ultimately charged after Williams’ DNA was found on the barrel of his gun.
Evans’ trial comes just one day after the U.S. Department of Justice announced it’s intent to start a civil rights investigation into Chicago’s police department, including its use of force. The fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by police prompted the investigation.
