Repeated Violence Plagued San Bernardino Shooter Syed Farook’s Family

syed-farook*Prior to being one half of the couple responsible for killing 14 people at a holiday party in San Bernardino, California on Wednesday, Syed Farook was surrounded by constant turmoil in his family.

According to TMZ, Farook’s mother, Rafia, went to court at least three times to get a restraining order against his father, who is also named Syed.

The site notes the drama went as far back as 2006 when Rafia, petitioned the court with claims that her husband physically brutalized her. In legal documents obtained by TMZ, Rafia stated, “He was drunk first he harassed me then he dropped the TV on me and outside of the house he pushed me toward the car. Again inside the house he tried to hit me. My daughter came in between to save me.”

Syed Farook was 19 at the time of the incident.

Rafia Farook goes on to reference a previous incident in April 2006 in the documents as she described her husband’s demeanor with the family and his constant drinking.

“He is always mad. Drinking all day. Screaming on me, shouting at my kids for no reason,” Rafia said. “That day he tried to hit me. I do not know exactly why he was mad.” She ends with, “My son came in between to save me.”

In 2008, things worsened as another restraining order was given to Rafia in February 2008. Like the other incidents, Farook’s father consumed alcohol.

“Syed (the father) had a fight with my son and me and he got drunk,” said Rafia. “I called at 6 AM to his brother in Chicago and I said he’s threatening to kill himself,” Rafia revealed in court documents that year, adding that, “He was drunk and I was outside of my house and he pushed me towards my car and then choked me” a month before the February 2008 incident.

TMZ reports that restraining orders were granted in both cases. In July 2008, Rafia returned to court amid claims that her husband was “mentally sick” and abusive toward her and her kids, including the young Farook.

Although the older Syed was ordered to move out of the family house and not possess firearms regarding the 2008 cases, Rafia’s July 2008 restraining order against him was denied.
