*Here’s the latest on the threatened 2016 Oscars boycott.

According to a statement sent to EURweb from Najee Ali, Los Angeles based political director, National Action Network/NAN, the boycott threat is still on.

The decision to move forward with the boycott comes on the heels of the Academy announcing  sweeping changes in the nomination procedures that will help usher in more people of color and, hopefully, solve the diversity issue the Academy is facing now.

Here’s the statement:

The National Action Network founded by Rev. Al Shapton who is  one of the nation’s leading civil rights leaders’ anti- Oscar’s boycott is still scheduled to happen on February 28, 2016 … the date of the Oscars broadcast outside the awards ceremony led by the National Action Network.

“The National Action Network is grateful for the Leadership of Cheryl Boone Isaacs president of the Academy Motion Picture of Art’s. We commend her and the Board of Governors for their announcement of the proposed changes to increase diversity within the academy. This is long overdue . But the Oscars’  boycott is in response to no African-American nominees in the major acting categories for the second year in a row.

“That’s simply unacceptable and we must take a stand. If no African-Americans are nominated why should we watch and support an all white Oscar’s? It sends a message that if Chris Rock, an African American, can be the host, and African Americans can  participate  as presenters,  but no African-Americans are worthy of a nomination. The job of African-American  talent at the ceremony is to entertain and  present white people their Oscars awards.

“Our goal is to continue the global boycott of the Oscar’s to send a message also to the movie studio’s that we also plan on coming after you. We’re demanding a complete overhaul of a system in Hollywood that’s still has roots of racism and sexism. It’s critical that we continue our fight to increase diversity and opportunities for women, ” stated Najee Ali political director of the National Action Network and Rev.KW.Tulloss president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Action Network.
