*The Atlanta Police Department is trying to make amends after being criticized for its handling of a situation involving rapper Blac Youngsta, which it labeled as a “misunderstanding.”
According to Vibe, the incident centered around authorities detaining Youngsta after he tried to make a $200,000 withdrawal from a local Wells Fargo branch. Turns out the police went after the wrong person.
In an email sent to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Sgt. Warren Pickard explained that that a 911 call was put in to police to report a man’s attempt to cash a forged check worth $24,000. The confrontation with Youngsta and his entourage came amid claims from authorities claim that they were given a “limited and conflicting” description of the suspect and his vehicle.
Pickard goes on to state that Youngsta was only held “briefly” and that he and his entourage were released once it was decided that they were not involved in the complaint.
“It was quickly discovered that the person providing the description to police had provided the wrong description of the suspect,” Pickard wrote in his email. “It was determined that the occupants of the vehicle were not involved. They were immediately released.”
The real suspect, Pickard said, was Charles Darnell. The 39-year-old was ultimately arrested and charged with first-degree forgery after Youngsta was set free. Making sure to set things straight regarding the situation, Pickard added that, “This incident did not directly involved Blac Youngsta, nor was he accused of committing a crime.”
