Gabby Union on Challenges Black Women Have Landing Smart Comedy Roles

gabrielle-union*With work on the big and small screen, Gabrielle Union can just about write her own ticket for any role she goes out for.

But apparently, the task of finding a smart role in a comedy is not as easy as it would seem for the “Being Mary Jane” star.

“There’s not a lot of smart comedies where they want a black woman. They want us shucking and jivin’ and cooning, that’s where they’re most comfortable having a black woman,” Union stated admitted during an interview on “The Angie Martinez Show.”

“So to get a role like Tina Fey, smart, edgy, more cerebel humor…no, they’re going to get Tiny Fey. They’re going to get Amy Poehler, they going to get Rashida Jones…that crew. So I just got to get invited to Judd Apatow’s house, and I feel like once I get in there hopefully I’ll make myself at home.”

Union’s “Top Five” co-star Chris Rock is among those who feel she’s on the same level as well-known funny ladies such as Fey when it comes to bring the humor for whatever is required.

“People don’t realize that Gabby Union is one of the funniest people out there…she’s like ‘Tiny Fey funny,'” Rock said on the same radio show in December. “With the right parts she could do something big, and turn around and play Rosa Parks.”
