LaLa Anthony, Lupita Nyong’o Hit Broadway Production of ‘Eclipsed’

LALA, LUPITA*LaLa Anthony has joined the producing team of the celebrated Broadway production of “Eclipsed.” Written by actress Danai Guriria (“The Walking Dead”), the drama also marks Lupita Nyong’o’s Broadway debut. It’s set amidst the Liberian Civil War, and received critical acclaim when it was previously presented at the Public Theater, Jet Magazine reports.

In a statement to Deadline, new producer LaLa expressed her excitement about bringing “thousands of young women to see the show” through its 10,000 Girls campaign.

“What an extraordinary opportunity to pave the way for the next generation of commanding young women,” she exclaimed. “Eclipsed is a stunning new play that demands to be seen, and to make my Broadway debut as a producer with it is an honor.”

Gurira and “Eclipsed” director Liesl Tommy partnered with the Broadway Education Alliance to launch its “10,000 Girls Campaign” to give 10,000 young women between the ages of 16 and 24 who live in the Tri-State area free tickets to see the critically acclaimed play. Their efforts are in response to the fact that “less than 10 percent of youth under the age of 18 and only 9.2 percent of Blacks and Hispanics actually attend shows on Broadway.”

Oscar-winner Lupita stopped by “The Daily Show” on December 2 to talk about the project, saying the performance required her to flex her acting chops more so than what she was required to do for “Star Wars.”

”What was harder was definitely Eclipsed,” Nyong’o admitted, “because there’s a stamina that you need to stay with this kind of material day in and day out.”

A preview for “Eclipsed” is slated for Feb. 23 at the Shubert Organization’s John Golden Theatre. The full run opens March 6 and closes June 19.
