Lupita Nyong’o Calls All-White Oscars ‘Unconscious Prejudice’

Lupita+Nyong+o*Lupita Nyong’o is the latest celebrity to express her disappointment in “the lack of inclusion in this year’s Academy Awards nominations,” which she says “has me thinking about unconscious prejudice and what merits prestige in our culture.”

Nyong’o, who won an Oscar for her role in ’12 Years a Slave’ in 2014, said the Academy Awards should be “a diverse reflection of the best of what our art has to offer today,” and that she will “stand with my peers who are calling for change in expanding the stories that are told and recognition of the people who will tell them.”

Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs released a statement earlier this week in which she said she was both “heartbroken and frustrated” that not a single person of color was nominated for an acting award.

“I hope that everybody understands that this organization is completely committed to turning this narrative around,” Boone Isaacs said on the red carpet at The King Legacy Awards & Benefit Gala in Los Angeles Monday night.

Spike Lee, who was honored in November with an Honorary Oscar, sat down with “Good Morning America” on Wednesday morning to clarify his previous statements regarding the Oscars lack of diversity.

“I have never used the word ‘boycott,’ ” Lee said. “All I said was my beautiful wife, Tonya, we’re not coming. It’s like, do you. We’re not coming.”

Actress Janet Hubert, who starred as the original mom on 1990s sitcom ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air,’ blasted Jada Pinkett-Smith for calling for a boycott the Oscars because her husband, Will Smith, did not receive a nomination for his ‘Concussion’ performance.

“Girl please, why are you always speaking for your man?” Hubert said in a video posted on Facebook. “It was the best performance of his career, which says this is the best performance HE has ever done, not necessarily academy worthy.”
