Taraji P. Henson, Viola Davis Slay on Elle’s ‘Women In TV’ Issue

taraji p. henson*”Empire” star and Golden Globe winner Taraji P. Henson OWNS Elle magazine’s February “Women In TV” issue. Hers is one of five covers highlighting TV’s biggest stars, including Viola Davis, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Priyanka Chopra, and Olivia Wilde.

Henson took home the Globe for Best Performance By An Actress In A Drama Television Series on Sunday. In the interview, she talks about her struggle to keep her Cookie Lyon character as authentic as possible while maintaining integrity to ensure she’s always taken seriously as a black actress.

“It was very important to me that she not be sassy and neck-rollin’ and eye-bulgin’ and attitude all the time,” Henson told Elle. “Everything she does is coming from a place of fighting for her family. That’s why she’s not a caricature.”

The 50-year-old actress expresses her frustration with Hollywood’s “slew of lies about women,” and society’s warped beauty standards.

“We’ve been fed a whole slew of lies about women,” said Viola. “By TV standards, if you are anywhere above a size 2, you’re not having sex. You don’t have sexual thoughts. You may not even have a vagina. And if you’re of a certain age, you’re off the table.”

Davis, who was the first black actress to win an Emmy for Best Actress in a TV Drama, said she had “mixed emotions” about her win.

“I just hope this is now a part of the status quo that women of color are included in the narratives that continue to write lead roles for us, to rethink how we see a leading lady and we don’t have to have this discussion anymore,” she said in her acceptance speech.

Both issues hit select newsstands January 13th and nationwide on January 19th.
