Viola Davis Takes a Vacation Away from the Oscars, Talks Diversity Drama

viola_davis*You can add Viola Davis to the list of people not attending this year’s Academy Awards.

But it’s not for the reason you think.

Chatting with “Entertainment Tonight ,” the “How to Get Away with Murder” star mentioned that she will “be on vacation” when Hollywood’s biggest night arrives. While she will be a no-show at the Oscars,  Davis did weigh in on the diversity issue that’s dominating coverage of the annual show.

For the second straight year, no entertainers of color were recognized with Oscar nominations in the major categories. As a result, social media users have utilized the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite to express their view of the situation.

In Davis’ eyes, the problem goes deeper than a lack of representation at the Oscars.

“The problem is not with the Oscars,” she told ET. “The problem is with the Hollywood movie-making system.”

From there, Davis sounded off with a series of questions that she feels “the people who are in power who have the yay or nay vote” should be asking.

“How many black films are being produced every year? How are they being distributed? The films that are being made, are the big-time producers thinking outside of the box in terms of how to cast the role?” Davis asked. “Can you cast a black woman in that role? Can you cast a black man in that role?”

“The problem isn’t even our pay,” the actress later added. “You could probably line up all the A-List black actresses out there [and] they probably don’t make what one A-List white woman makes in one film. That’s the problem. You can change the Academy, but if there are no black films being produced, what is there to vote for?”

So what say you? Does Davis have a point with her comments on the Hollywood’s lack of diversity or is the issue strictly relegated to the Oscars?
