*Beyoncé surprised fans on Saturday when she dropped new song “Formation,” with an accompanying music video, the day before her performance at Super Bowl 50.

Directed by Melina Matsoukas, the video features scenes from the 2012 New Orleans documentary “That B.E.A.T.”

The filmmakers initially responded to the artful video with accusations of thievery, but Bey’s reps responded swift, and shut down such madness by assuring fans that they did get permission to use footage from the doc.

Director Abteen Bagheri and producer Chris Black took to twitter to expresses their disappointment that their work was used without permission, and that they were not given proper credit. The duo attacked Bey, Matsoukas and the message of “Formation,” BET reports.

“Why Melina gotta use clips from our doc?!? Was the budget not big enough to spend a week in New Orleans and actually build with the people,” Chris posted on Twitter.

Mrs. Carter’s reps reached out to Entertainment Weekly to clear up the controversy, saying: “The documentary footage was used with permission and licensed from the owner of the footage. They were given proper compensation. The footage was provided to us by the filmmaker’s production company. The filmmaker is listed in the credits for additional photography direction. We are thankful that they granted us permission.”

After his rant, and reading Team Bey’s response, Black must’ve gone back to review his contract because he later admitted that he and Bagheri are not the sole rights holders to the footage. Ha! We’re certain he’s appreciative that thanks to Beyonce, their B.E.A.T project will likely be experienced by many more people all over the world.
