Coogler, DuVernay’s Oscar Night at Water Crisis Event in Flint

Ryan Coogler and Ava DuVernay*Some people will watch the Oscars this Sunday. Some will boycott the annual show.

Ava DuVernay and Ryan Coogler will spend Hollywood’s biggest night giving back in Flint, Michigan. The pair are among a group of celebrities who will be on hand for #JUSTICEFORFLINT, a free event designed to raise awareness of the lead water crisis that’s plagued the embattled city.

Although it’s noticeable that #JUSTICEFORFLINT happens on the same night as the Oscar, Coogler expressed that it’s just a coincidence, saying that the date was chosen because it fell on the final weekend of Black History Month. The “Creed” director and fellow filmmaker DuVernay will host the event with Hannibal Buress.

In addition to raising awareness of the lead water crisis, Flint residents will be able to take the stage in front of a live audience to share their personal experiences dealing with the situation at the event, which will take place at the Whiting Auditorium.

Other celebrities taking in #JUSTICEFORFLINT include singer Janelle Monae and “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams.

“With the #JUSTICEFORFLINT benefit event we will give a voice to the members of the community who were the victims of the choices of people in power who are paid to protect them, as well as provide them with a night of entertainment, unity and emotional healing, Through the live stream we will also give a chance for people around the world to participate, and to donate funds to programs for Flint’s youth,” Coogler said in a statement.
