*Fox’s three-hour live telecast of the musical was a ratings success.

The performance averaged 12.2 million viewers and first place among the broadcast networks for the night, according to Nielsen.

Compared to NBC’s three musicals, “Grease” fell way short of “The Sound of Music Live’s” 18.3 million in 2013. But it topped “The Wiz Live,” which drew 11 million viewers in December.

“Grease Live” director Thomas Kail, of Hamilton fame, was praised for putting the production on multiple soundstages and outdoor areas (at times, in the rain) in front of a live audience. Also, star Vanessa Hudgens’ performance as Rizzo was particularly noteworthy after news broke that her father had passed away the night before.
