Jubilee Project Video Discusses a ‘World Without Black People’

what-would-the-world-look-like without black people video*Although a world without black people would bring a smile to many racists, it is a safe bet that this will never be a reality. But a new video is actually exploring that scenario through a thought provoking discussion.

The Huffington Post reports the clip, titled “World Without Black People,” comes from a group called the Jubilee Project, which is known for collaborating with non-profit organizations to create short films, PSAs and documentaries in collaboration that raise awareness about social justice issues.

Taking to the streets of Boston and Los Angeles, Jubilee Project co-founder and filmmaker Eric I. Lu is featured in the video approaching people of various races and asking them what a world without black people would be like.

Responses to the question included, “Music as we know it would not exist,” and “There would be no hip hop…that would suck.”

Founded by three Asian men, Project Jubilee is out to expand the conversation about race beyond black and white people in the “World Without Black People” video. In a statement on their YouTube Page, the founders detailed their purpose in making the video, saying it was done to “stand in solidarity with our black brothers and sisters, and challenge you to have a similar conversation of your own.”

As the video continues, discussion shifts from imagining a world without black people to personal feelings about race and racism in America as participants touch on the bit of aggression black people encounter daily as well as racist thoughts that white and non-black people sometimes “can’t really help” but have.

“I do my best to try and recognize when that’s happening,” one white man in the video explains, “I try to fight it, and try to talk about it.”
