“None of us know what really went on inside that truck,” says Malcolm Jamal Warner, whose role as O.J. Simpson’s best friend Al “A.C.” Cowlings got a lot of face time this week in the FX series “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.”

Tuesday’s episode was all about the Bronco chase, when A.C. famously drove O.J. through the freeways of Los Angeles as the former NFL star – newly charged with murder – threatened suicide in the backseat.

Looking to avoid a potentially violent takedown splashed across live TV, LAPD in pursuit maintained a safe distance behind the duo, while other officers cleared traffic ahead of the vehicle as A.C. calmly drove O.J. to his home. There, cops were waiting with handcuffs.

Tuesday’s episode dramatized well-documented events that happened outside of the white Bronco – like Robert Kardashian reading Simpson’s goodbye letter on live television. But what about the scenes inside of the truck? How close to real life were the conversations?

As Warner stated, there is no way to know exactly what was said inside of the vehicle. The actor, 45, said he was ultimately more interested in conveying the truth of their relationship under such life-or-death circumstances.

“Based on the research I had done on their friendship, A.C. was really O.J.’s guide,” Warner tells EURweb exclusively. “He was always in his corner, always had his back. Even to the extent of – whether he felt O.J. was guilty or not, his first instinct was to be there for him. ‘So we gonna ride until you, O.J., can get your head around what is getting ready to happen.’”

Below, Warner talks more about O.J. and A.C.’s friendship, and whether or not he met the real A.C. as part of his research into the role:

“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
