Man Skips Work For Years, No One Notices

*I did manage to unplug for a bit and take in the gorgeous sights. I got grief about it from a few of my colleagues, and that was after just one week away.

I wonder what they’d have thought if I’d stayed away for six years.

Joaquin Garcia, 69, did just that. The retiree was fined $30,000 recently after officials discovered he hadn’t shown up for work for at least six of his final years on the job. Ironically, the civil servant’s extended sabbatical was discovered only after the deputy mayor of the town he lived in tried to give Garcia an award for 20 years of “loyal and dedicated” service in 2010.

“I thought, where is this man?” the deputy mayor said. “Is he still there? Has he retired? Has he died?”

Garcia did in fact retire shortly after a legal case against him was launched that year. It finally wrapped up this week…
