Marshawn Lynch Retires Without Having Spent His $50M NFL Income

marshawn lynch*Despite entering the second season of a three-year, $31 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks, Marshawn Lynch is now retired from the game of football.

SB Nation reports the 29-year-old all-star running back took to social media during the Super Bowl to announce his retirement via a picture he posted of a pair of cleats on a power line along with an emoji.

Despite the cryptic look of the message, Lynch’s teammate, Richard Sherman, brought the situation with a post of his own that seemed to confirm Lynch’s announcement.

Like Sherman, the Seahawks went on to confirm the news with the following post:

News of Lynch’s retirement comes after ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned that the athlete was telling those close to him that he will retire. Although Lynch’s teammates are making an extra effort to convince him to return next season, he already told the Seahawks that he intends to call it a day.

With Lynch’s retirement comes the end of a career that started with the Buffalo Bills after being selected by the team in the first round. Four seasons later, Lynch was traded to the Seahawks, where he emerged as arguably the best running back in the NFL with running for at least 1,200 yards in four-straight seasons, carrying the ball just 111 times for 417 yards in 2015 and playing in seven games while dealing with hamstring and abdominal injuries. As a result of his athletics and running style, Lynch was nicknamed “Beastmode.”

In his nine years with the NFL, Lynch gained 9,112 yards and notched a niche for probably breaking just as many tackles in the process. Among his most memorable plays was one that became known as the “BeastQuake.”

Although speculation existed of him retiring after last season, Lynch ultimately returned to play one last season before signing off from pro football. Lynch calling it a day ends up with $11.5 million coming off the Seahawks’ books.

With tons of endorsements, not to mention just opening his first Flagship ‘Beastmode’ store, Lynch is far away from being without sufficient funds. So much so that Spotrac reports that the athlete has saved every ounce of the close to $50 million he’s made since entering the NFL. Close to $50 million saved with $60 million in sight if the Seahawks opt against cutting him over the next two seasons.

So yes. Marshawn Lynch won’t be hurting for money or anything he wants to spend it on anytime soon. Scroll below for social media commentary about Lynch and the money he’s saved:
