Meryl Streep’s ‘We’re all African’ Crazy Talk About Diversity

Meryl Streep*Oh Lord, Meryl Streep … girl, you tried it!

Y’all need to stop asking white folks to weigh in on diversity and inclusion – especially white Hollywood. This writer understands that the discussion must be had if we want to see any real change, but it’s starting to reach epic Raven level.

What is “epic Raven level”?

Well, you know how folks keep asking Raven-Symone to comment on hot trigger topics, only to have her spew a crazy answer that minimizes the struggle or mocks the black collective? Yeah…that’s epic Raven level, and the more we ask members of white Hollywood to comment on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, the more their answers seem to defy Raven’s blissful ignorance.

Meryl Streep has just inducted herself into the “Please, don’t ask that b*tch to comment” club, after she dismissed questions about diversity and inclusion during a press conference at the Berlin Film Festival, and she responded by saying: “We’re all African really.”

Well, that’s certainly a pause worthy answer to the question.

“This jury is evidence that at least women are included and in fact dominate this jury,” Streep said to reporters. “That’s an unusual situation in bodies of people who make decisions. So I think the Berlinale is ahead of the game.”

Yup – Streep, and those who co-sign with her ramblings, continue to prove that not only do they not “get it,” they don’t want to understand. Many believe that as long as a white woman or an interracial couple (black man and white woman), is represented, then the mission of inclusion has been accomplished.

Oscar-winning Streep is the president of the Berlin International Film Festival this year, so naturally she was hosting an all-white panel when she was asked to comment on Hollywood diversity. Too bad she didn’t use her experience and influence to address how “Black voices are left unheard,” and encourage the next generation of white filmmakers to step out of their privileged comfort zones by taking on subject matter that challenges their creative process. After all, if white folks want to continue to dominate awards season, then they best ditch all the lily-white movie remakes and sequels and hop on board the BLACK is the NEW BLACK bandwagon, cause a change is coming – despite the resistance from old school-minded members of Hollywood.
