Michael Jordan’s Rep Responds to ‘Crying Jordan’ Memes

Michael Jordan*The Carolina Panthers were still in the midst of losing the Super Bowl on Sunday when the “no chill” players from the sidelines of Internet emerged to share memes of Michael Jordan‘s crying face on Cam Newton and various Panthers players.

Considering that Jordan’s image is carefully monitored to ensure no one is capitalizing off his success, we wonder what does the man himself thinks of the now infamous image that’s been used to accompany everything from personal-to-political statements.

A rep for Jordan reportedly told TMZ that “Everyone seems to be having fun with the meme,” adding:  “We haven’t seen anyone using it to promote their commercial interests, which is something that we’re monitoring.”

Back in 2009, Jordan was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, and his emotional speech birthed one of the most essential memes in Internet history. The Wall Street Journal tracked down Stephan Savoia, a photographer for the Associated Press who snapped the image of a crying Michael Jordan. UPROXX reports that Savoia said he wasn’t even unaware that the Crying Jordan image was the one he took when Michael was weeping at his 2009 Hall of Fame ceremony.

Even Stephen Curry shared the Jordan crying meme after his team’s loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday in Super Bowl 50. The NBA superstar posted a photo of himself banging the Panthers’ “Keep Pounding” drum, and the picture had an image of “Crying Jordan.”

Jordan’s reps stay on the clock watching to see if someone uses the meme as a form of advertising. But, so far, no one is dumb enough to try the Bulls legend. MJ famously went after the grocery store chain Dominick’s for using his name without authorization. He won an $8.9 million settlement and the chain has since gone out of business. Jordan donated the money to charity.
