*Jerry L. Green, producer of the Southern California Black Business Expo on Tour 2015-2016, wants Black consumers to use more of their dollars to support Black-owned businesses.

Green will give Black businesses a chance to exhibit their products and services at the next Southern California Black Business Expo on Tour 2015-2016 event which will be held Saturday, Feb. 27, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The event will be held at United Economic Development Fund Inc., 745 E. Alta Dena Dr., Altadena.

Black Business Expo

Currently Southern California Black Business Expo on Tour 2015-2016 hosts 12 events (1 monthly) in different cities every year.

Black consumers wield a lot of economic clout. According to Green:

“Black consumers in Southern California (Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties) spend between $27-32 billion annually.” According to the Nielsen Company, nationwide Black consumers spend $1.1 trillion annually.

Unlike other ethnic groups, Black consumers don’t spend a lot of their disposable income with Black businesses. Many state that they don’t know who and where the Black businesses are. “Right now, Black consumers only spend approximately 3 percent of their money with Black businesses,” said Green. The Southern California Black Business Expo on Tour 2015-2016 is striving to change these dynamics.

More Blacks seem to be leaving Corporate America and starting their own businesses. This is something encouraged by finance professor and author Dr. Boyce Watkins.

“Don’t teach your children how to get a job, teach them how to create a job,” said Watkins in an article posted on his site Financial Juneteenth. “Even if they are not a full-time entrepreneur, knowing how to build a business and manage money provides the additional economic security which comes from having multiple streams of income and a backup plan for that day when Corporate America lets you down. We are meant to be economically successful.”
