*Now we know what “Straight Outta Compton” maybe could’ve done to at least gotten the attention of Oscar voters. Yep, it’s real simple. It would have had to recenter itself around the white character.
To show how it’s done, Super Deluxe has posted a recut trailer of the film that focuses squarely on Paul Giamatti’s “hip-hop pioneer” character, Jerry Heller, and how he supposedly created NWA, and “sparked a music revolution.”
You probably won’t be surprised to know that Giamatti/Heller is in every scene. Did we mention that there’s the generic inspirational music that Hollywood just loves to feature. And guess what, you never even hear NWA rapping at all. Nope, no NWA music for the whitewashed trailer.
Oh, and would you believe that you’re made to believe the white guy came up with “f*ck tha police?”
Yep, you gotta see this. Watch and laugh. Or get pissed.
