11-Year-Old BeeSweet Lemonade Creator Gets Whole Foods Deal

mikaila ulmer*Mikaila Ulmer’s mind for business is paying off in a major way as the 11-year-old  entrepreneur is now aligned with Whole Foods.

NBC News reports the alliance stemmed from a distribution deal Ulmer recently landed with the grocers to distribute BeeSweet, a flaxseed-based lemonade she created that is sweetened by the honey of local bees. As a result of the deal, BeeSweet will be on the shelves of 55 Whole Foods store locations.

Although her hard work is resulting in success, the ironic thing is Ulmer wouldn’t have had the idea to launch BeeSweet if it weren’t for an unfortunate encounter she had with bees.

According to NBC, Ulmer got stung by two bees when she was 4-years-old. The incident apparently had an effect as she began researching bees after getting stung. From her research, Ulmer discovered that bees are not only greatly important to the ecosystem, but they’re also endangered.

“Last year, beekeepers lost 40 percent of all their hives. Bees are dying,” Ulmer told NBC while quoting Albert Einstein who said: “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left.”

Ulmer’s deal with Whole Foods marks her latest pre-high school accomplishment. In addition to running her own business between doing homework, the sixth grader is noted for being a speaker and philanthropist as well as winning $60,000 on the hit ABC show “Shark Tank” last year.

Add the fact that she met President Barack Obama last year at the White House Kids’ State Dinner and it’s a safe bet that Ulmer’s future is filled with more great things to come.
