Award Winning Pianist Kris Bowers to Perform at Benefit Concert

*Los Angeles, CA – Award winning pianist Kris Bowers has agreed to headline a Community Jazz concert  as his way of giving back to organizations that supported and encouraged his achievement and success. Bowers has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades.

Most notably, in September 2011, he won the coveted Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He recently became a Steinway Artist and was named one of twelve “Artists to Watch” by iTunes.

His album (Heroes + Misfits) won “Best New Jazz Album” at the 2014 Jazz Japan Awards. Bowers was one of 6 composers to participate in the Sundance Film Composers Lab at Skywalker Sound.

The event’s chairman is Clifton L. Johnson who is a long term member of the Watts Willowbrook Boys and Girls club.

Honorary co-chair, Sheryl Lee Ralph will also perform in support of this concert.

Other honorary co-chairs include Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan,  Virgil RobertsChristopher Reynolds,Troy C. DawsonDon BufordKawanna BrownKevin McDowellLA Doris McClaneyLos Angeles Commissioners Mike Davis and Joel F. Jacinto, Tavio HobsonMirion Bowersand Grover McKean.

The event takes place Saturday, March 26, 2016 at Colburn School‘s Zipper Hall 200 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles.

The 2 organizations being supported are The Watts/Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club (WWBGC) which was founded in 1957 as a gift to the community from the Los Angeles Times Charities, Inc. This organization was the first to serve the south Los Angeles area. The purpose of this Boys & Girls Club is to provide essential educational programs, activities, experiences, and support services to youth members to assure that success is within reach of each young person who walks through the doors.  Congregational Church of Christian Fellowship (CCCF) has been serving the Los Angeles /Urban Community 70 years and focus primarily on resource and awareness events such as cancer and domestic violence.
