*In the latest flare up involving Chance the Rapper and Spike Lee over “Chi-raq,” the Chicago rapper has fired back at Lee after the filmmaker called him a “fraud” last week during a screening of his film at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Chance, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, has been vocal about his opposition to “Chi-raq,” feeling its satirical approach to addressing Chicago’s gun violence is misguided.
Students asked Lee about Chance’s criticisms, and according to Northwestern student magazine North by Northwestern, the director responded by calling the rapper a “straight-up fraud.”
“He puts himself up as a speaker of the people, but that means you have to put truths that you see,” Lee reportedly said. “That doesn’t mean you can pick and choose what you talk about.”
In a series of tweets Tuesday, Chance responded to Lee’s slight, doubling down on his criticism of “Chi-raq” and threatening to release audio of Spike “begging” him to “be in that trash ass movie.”
