*As I settled in to my first-ever trip to Hawaii, the mayor of Hawaii’s Big Island declared a state of emergency over the dengue fever outbreak that now includes 260 cases.
I seem to have gotten off of Oahu and back home to California safely, i.e. fever free. Dodged THAT bullet.
Hawaii’s governor has for now said he won’t declare a statewide emergency until the outbreak spreads to other islands or includes other diseases, such as the Zika virus.
Symptoms of dengue fever include a sudden, high fever; severe headaches; pain behind the eyes; severe joint and muscle pain; fatigue; nausea and vomiting; skin rash; and mild bleeding (nose, gums, or easy bruising).
